Alphanumeric SMS Sender ID Guide

As part of the Australian Communication and Media Authority (ACMA) SMS Sender ID Register, from July 1st 2026, all alphanumeric SMS Sender IDs must be registered to be used for any outbound SMS messages.

From July 1st 2026, all text messages sent with unregistered sender IDs will have the sender ID replaced with the word ‘Unverified’.

What is an alphanumeric SMS Sender ID?

An alphanumeric SMS Sender ID is a customizable text and numeric ID (up to 11 characters) that replaces a phone number to identify the sender of an SMS message. e.g displaying your brand or company name instead of a number. Before you start

You will need the following:

How to submit an ACMA application to register a SMS Sender ID in GoFax

  1. Log in to your GoFax secure web portal
  2. ​Go to the left main menu, select "Send SMS Service" > "Sender IDs".
  3. Select "Register New" (or "EDIT" if you need to submit an existing SenderID)
  4. Choose "Alphanumeric"
  5. Click "Next"
  6. Enter your Australian Business Number (ABN), then click Look up ABN. (If found in the ABR, your entity details will be automatically populated)
  7. Confirm entity details. Check carefully that the business name and entity type match your organisation
  8. Enter your organisation’s website
  9. Enter your organisation's address (your official address as listed on our ABN)
  10. Enter your organisation's business phone number
  11. Click "Next"
  12. Enter the Sender ID you want to register. Ensuring it meets formatting requirements.
  13. Enter your organisation's Contact Details for the authorised contact listed on the ABR. How to find the authorised contact on the ABR.

  14. Select the most appropriate Valid Use Case type for your Sender ID. Use cases include:

    1. Registered business name

    2. Registered company name

    3. Registered trademark

    4. Registered domain name

    5. Enter a Use Case description. A (maximum 500 characters) description of how the Sender ID will be used e.g types of messages you intend to send from this Sender ID

  15. Proceed to review/agree to the declaration:

  16. Submit your application.
  17. The application status will change to 'IN PROGRESS'. 
  18. As part of the ACMA's requirements, your application will be reviewed by GoFax and then submitted to the ACMA for their processing. 
  19. After GoFax has submitted the application, your business's main ABN contact will receive an email from ACMA to confirm the application. The SMS Sender ID Register is on the ACMA’s online portal ACMA Assist. Your main ABN contact will need to prove their identity using the Australian Government’s Digital ID app myID when logging on to ACMA Assist to view, confirm and revoke sender IDs for your organisation.
  20. Once your ABN contact has verified the SMS Sender ID application with ACMA, you will receive an email from ACMA & GoFax upon approval or rejection.
  21. For ACMA approved registrations, the SMS Sender ID in GoFax will automatically be updated to 'Ready For Use'. 
  22. For ACMA rejected registrations, the SMS Sender ID in GoFax will automatically be updated to 'Rejected'. Depending on the rejection reason, you may be able to 'Edit'and resubmit an application. 
  23. You can log in and view the status of each SMS Sender ID application within your GoFax secure web portal. View alphanumeric SMS Sender ID registration statuses.

ACMA will not process the application if your ABN main contact does not confirm. 

💡You must contact each SMS messaging provider that you want to send SMS messages with using alphanumeric SMS sender IDs to authorise them to send messages for you using your registered sender ID.
