Applying to use a custom SMS Sender ID with GoFax

Important: From 1 July 2026, to use an alphanumeric SMS Sender ID in Australia, it must be registered and approved via the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) Sender ID Register. Registration is available in your GoFax account. 

GoFax users have the option to use a custom SMS Sender ID instead of a GoFax-hosted virtual SMS number when sending SMS messages.

An SMS Sender ID is used to identify the sender 'From name or number' to the SMS recipient. In GoFax, you can use the following SMS Sender ID options:

  • numeric (proof of number ownership required)

  • alphanumeric (ACMA registration required)

  • alphabetical (ACMA registration required).

All Sender IDs can be up to a maximum of 11 characters, including spaces.

Requesting a custom Sender ID

  1. Log in to your GoFax account.
  2. On the left navigation, select "Send SMS Service".
  3. Under this menu, select "Sender IDs".
  4. For any existing alphanumeric Sender IDs that you need to use, registration in the ACMA Sender ID Register is required. Click 'Register Now' or,
  5. For all new Sender IDs, click on 'Register New'.
  6. Choose preferred Sender ID option: 
    1. Alphanumeric (An SMS Sender ID that represents your business name or brand. Can be a combination of letters, numbers, and symbols, between 2-11 characters long.)
    2. Numeric (A numeric-only SMS Sender ID. Up to 11 digits without spaces or dashes. Verification of ownership is required.)
  7. Select 'Next'
  8. Proceed to enter the required information and select 'Submit for Approval'.  
  9. Your custom SMS Sender ID request will be sent to GoFax Support for review.

Landline numbers can not be used as a Sender ID for SMS as these messages may get rejected by Mobile Carrier Networks.

You may enter your existing mobile number to receive replies directly to your mobile device. GoFax we will need to verify any non-GoFax-hosted number used as SMS Sender ID. Apon submitting a new application, please email your latest service provider tax invoice to support@gofax.com.au to assist our team in verifying ownership.

How long does it take to get Sender ID approval?

For alphanumeric SMS Sender IDs, as part of the ACMA's SMS Sender ID Register process, GoFax is required to check all applications prior to submitting to the ACMA. GoFax will aim to review new applications within 1 business day, during business hours. Once GoFax submit the application to the ACMA, their review and approval for SMS Sender IDs may take a few hours or several business days. As part of this process, your ABN Authorised Contact is required to log in to ACMA Assist, using their myID to approve the application. 

For numeric SMS Sender IDs, GoFax will aim to review new applications within 1 business day, during business hours. Our team will require proof of number ownership e.g a copy of a recent tax invoice, for all non-GoFax-hosted numeric Sender IDs.

You will receive an email once your SMS Sender ID review is completed and is 'Ready to Use'. 

Can I use a GoFax Virtual SMS Number as a Sender ID?

Yes, if you purchase a GoFax virtual SMS number, it will be automatically added to the list of approved Sender IDs.
